Protect themselves from volcanic eruptions

I protect myself from volcanic eruptions

By studying the history of volcanoes in depth, we can better understand how they work and take appropriate measures. Past events are located and mapped to better understand the risks and develop scenarios. While it is currently impossible to say precisely when and where a volcanic eruption will occur, it is always preceded by several warning signs: small earthquakes, deformation of the volcano, gas emissions, etc.

These warning signs are monitored by volcanological and seismological observatories where these exist. The University of the West Indies also monitors the Caribbean as a whole.

In the event of a volcanic eruption, the authorities must trigger the alerts provided to warn the population.

What can you do about the risks of a volcanic eruption?

To anticipate risks, it is possible to obtain information from the Mairie (Town Hall) on the following points
and follow the instructions of the authorities.

During an eruption, it is important to stay informed of the activity (on the radio), avoid high-risk areas during the alert phase and evacuate if ordered to do so. If the air is too thick with gas or ash, breathing through a mask or damp cloth can help you cope. After an eruption, clear the ashes (particularly from roofs) as soon as possible, but without taking any risks.
