Protection against flooding
I protect myself against flooding
To reduce the risk of flooding, local authorities are drawing up planning documents to regulate building permits and human settlements in the most dangerous areas where people's safety cannot be guaranteed.
Weather forecasts are also an essential tool for the authorities in their flood protection measures.
What to do about flood risk
Before a flood, it is important to check with the Mairie to find out whether your home is in a flood zone. Similarly, if you are going to swim in a river or pond, or walk near a gully, check the weather forecast before you go.
Generally speaking, you need to be aware of the different levels of vigilance you need to maintain over your
territory concerning the risk of flooding.
If the water rises, take refuge on a high point (e.g. hill or upper floor of the house). At home, turn off the electricity and gas. When travelling by car or on foot, never cross a submerged ford, limit your movements as much as possible and never enter a flooded area.
After a flood, everything has to be cleaned and disinfected before you can move back in.
Electricity must be switched back on in a dry place. It is important to remain vigilant, as tap water may be unfit to drink for several days.
